Calculating a Quarter Average

Grade 6 - Classes are weighted based on the amount of time you spend in the class.  If you have a class every day, then the weight is 1.0.  If you have a class every other day, the weight is only .5.

When you calculate your numerical average at the end of each quarter, you need to make sure that you have the correct value or weight attached to each class.  If not, you will not have the correct average which can be the difference between honor roll, high honor roll, or not making honor roll.

Your average for Literacy should be counted twice, or have double the weight as your other academic classes. This is because you have Literacy for two periods every day.

Special Area Classes for all Grades: Since you attend your special area classes every other day, they are only given half the weight of an academic class since you attend that class less often.

Sample Calculation of a Sixth Grade Report Card:

First Quarter Grades:

Literacy - 89

Math - 95

Science- 93

Social Studies - 85

Physical Education - 80

Art - 85

Band - 90

Wood Tech - 88

Identify the weight of each class:

Literacy - 2.0                   178

Math - 1.0                         95

Science - 1.0                    93

Social Studies - 1.0          85

PE (.5 or ½)                     40 (Each special area average is divided in half because the

Art (.5 or ½)                     42.5 weight of each class is 0.5 or one half, of the total grade.)

Band (.5 or ½)                 45

Wood Tech (.5 or ½)     +44

Total Credits = 7            622.5

Divide the sum of your grades, weighted, by the number of credits. In this case it would be 622.5 divided by 7, which would equal 88.93%.  For honor roll you need an 85%-89% and for high honor roll you need a 90% or above for the quarter.

Grades 7 and 8 -  Classes are weighted based on the amount of time you spend in the class.  If you have a class every day, then the weight is 1.0.  If you have a class every other day, the weight is only .5.  Since you attend your special area classes every other day, they are only given half the weight of an academic class since you attend that class less often.
